Today’s NHL Prop Picks and Best Bets - Tuesday, January 23
There are nine games on the ice Tuesday, and the schedule is dotted with a handful of huge favorites in the NHL odds.
The Minnesota Wild, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and New York Rangers are all carrying significant chalk, while the matchup between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Philadelphia Flyers checks out as the marquee matchup from the early wave of games.
Additionally, the Vegas Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks are both playing for the second consecutive night, and the Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Buffalo Sabres are also all on the front end of a back-to-back road set.
Here are our free NHL picks and top NHL player props for Tuesday, January 23.

Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets
Prop bet #1: Wyatt time
The Dallas Stars have a new-look No. 1 line, and Wyatt Johnston has flashed since joining Roope Hintz and Jason Robinson atop the depth chart. It’s been a powerhouse combo through four games and 45:37 of shared five-on-five ice time. The trio have clicked for four goals and 13 high-danger scoring chances while driving possession with a 68.2 Corsi For percentage and generating 82.2% of the expected goals.
Johnston has picked up a pair of goals and assists during the four-Game stretch, and his on-ice goals per 60 minutes have skyrocketed from 1.83 without Hintz and Robertson to an elite 5.26.
This isn’t a scary matchup, either. The Detroit Red Wings rank third last in CF% (45.3%) while allowing the seventh-most goals per 60 (2.76) at 5-on-5. I also value these Wyatt Johnston odds because the Dallas top line had 14 scoring chances at 5-on-5 without scoring against the New York Islanders on Sunday. The dominant play won’t go unrewarded again Tuesday.
Wyatt Johnston prop: Over 0.5 points (+110 at Bet99)
Prop bet #2: Roll with Rossi
Minnesota Wild superstar Kirill Kaprizov is the straw that stirs the offensive drink, and rookie center Marco Rossi has landed between Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello on the top line again. The trio clicked for three goals at five-on-five during Minny’s daunting three-game road trip against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, and Carolina Hurricanes, and now the Wild draw a favorable home-ice matchup against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.
The Caps rank sixth last in Corsi For percentage (45.6%) while allowing the 10th-most goals (2.83) and expected goals (2.71) per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 on the road. I am also expecting Minnesota’s second line, centered by Joel Eriksson Ek, to draw the toughest on-ice matchups to clear the way for Rossi and company to skate against inferior opponents. Additionally, Washington starter Darcy Kuemper has also been lit up with a .881 save percentage and 3.64 GAA through 11 appearances on the highway.
These Marco Rossi odds also don’t fully align with the prices in the points market for Kaprizov or Zuccarello. Kaprizov has a 1.5-point total, and Zuccarello is -240 to go Over 0.5 points. With the majority of Tuesday’s game likely to be played at even strength, if Kaprizov and Zuccarello are saddled with sizable vigs to mark the scoresheet, Rossi carrying plus-money odds is a nice find.
Marco Rossi prop: Over 0.5 points (+130 at Bet99)
Prop bet #3: Layup in San Jose for Laffy
Not only is this a back-to-back spot for the San Jose Sharks, but it’s also their third game in four nights. So, with San Jose coming off a 4-3 shootout road upset over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, I’m anticipating even less bite from the Sharks tonight.
This is the final leg of a four-game road trip for the New York Rangers, and they can head back east with a 2-2 split by topping the basement-dwelling Sharks. New York is a huge favorite, and turning to winger Alexis Lafreniere’s shot prop stood out as an opportunity to take advantage of the mismatch.
While Lafreniere has failed to top this 2.5-shot total in four consecutive games, it can largely be chalked up to converting just seven of his 17 attempts into shots (41.2%). He’s converted 54.9% of attempts into shots through the first 42 games of the season, and Lafreniere has clicked with linemates Vincent Trochek and Artemi Panarin for a rock-solid 59.9 Corsi For percentage at five-on-five this season.
With San Jose allowing the most shots per Game (35.6) and attempts per 60 minutes (71.27) while ranking last in 5-on-5 CF% (43.2%), I’m expecting Lafreniere’s shooting efficiency to improve on Tuesday. These Alexis Lafreniere odds are also in line with the rest of the industry, and I’m showing a small value based on a projection of 3.06 shots for the winger.
Alexis Lafreniere prop: Over 2.5 shots (-120 at Bet99)
