During Friday's press conference, Arteta was asked whether Arsenal had the chance of com Pet ing with Madrid and winning the race for Mbappe's signature. "When there is a player of that calibre, we always have to be in the conversation," Arteta smiled. "But, as you say, it looks in a different way, that's what I'll say....

Arsenal 3-1 Liverpool: Player ratings as Alisson & Van Dijk howlers keep Gunners in title race

Image
Arsenal kept their Premier League title hopes alive with a huge 3-1 victory over Liverpool at the Emirates on Sunday. Facing the prospect of falling eight points behind with defeat, Arsenal brought one of their best performances of the season as they roared into an early lead courtesy of Bukayo Saka. Gabriel Magalhaes' comical own goal on the stroke of half-time set up an intriguing second half, but the humour reached its peak when Alisson and Virgil van Dijk conspired to hand Gabriel Martinelli a simple go-ahead goal. Ibrahima Konate was shown a second yellow card in the dying embers, before substitute Leandro Trossard fired through Alisson in stoppage time to seal a stunning win. How the game unfolded Arsenal's high press was causing problems for Liverpool in the opening stages but their first real sight of goal came from a counter. Martinelli went fizzing down the left wing and floated a cross in to Saka, whose diving header should have found the back of the net but ended...

Jose Mourinho's agent drops hint over next move after Roma departure

Image
Jose Mourinho's agent has confirmed the Portuguese boss will only return to work with a "top side" following his departure from Roma. Roma suddenly cut ties with Mourinho earlier this week after a slump in form, with the 60-year-old visibly emotional as he bid farewell to supporters. He had publicly admitted his desire to sign a new contract and was not considering options elsewhere at the time of his departure. 90min revealed shortly after that links between Mourinho and either Chelsea or Newcastle United were simply speculative at this point, although the boss is expected to receive further contact from Saudi Arabia after rejecting a move to Al Hilal during the summer. Asked for his client's next move, Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes told La Gazzetta dello Sport : "It’s too early to say now. He is a coach for top sides; he’s always worked for top sides. He is an excellent coach and he’s proved it everywhere he’s worked. "Saudi clubs already called him mo...

Cole Palmer's Chelsea goal celebration explained

The disarming nonchalance Cole Palmer has shown throughout his debut season at Chelsea can mask how little top-flight experience the 21-year-old possessed before moving to west London. Palmer joined Manchester City as a six-year-old but was only afforded three Premier League starts in Pep Guardiola's superteam. Chelsea paid £42.5m for an attacking midfielder with promise but one with fewer league goals (zero) or assists (one) than Liverpool's goalkeeper Alisson (one goal, three assists). The gamble has well and truly paid off. Even in Mauricio Pochettino's chaotic squad, Palmer has effortlessly excelled, strolling through Game s and stroking the ball into the back of the net with alarming regularity. Before the halfway stage of his debut campaign, Palmer had already scored more Premier League goals than any Chelsea player managed across the entirety of the previous season. On such a prolific run, Palmer has had ample opportunity to craft a trademark goal celebration. The p...

Newcastle 2-3 Man City: Player ratings as De Bruyne saves the day from the bench

Image
Manchester City had Kevin De Bruyne to thank as the Belgian made an immediate impact off the bench to salvage a 3-2 win over Newcastle United on Saturday. City lost goalkeeper Ederson to injury inside the opening minutes but bounced back and took the lead through Bernardo Silva, but Newcastle roared ahead with two goals in quick succession from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon towards the end of the first half. With City struggling in their quest for an equaliser, Pep Guardiola turned to De Bruyne, who needed just five touches of the ball to score, and in the dying embers of the game, it was the Belgian's stunning pass which sent Oscar Bobb through on goal to tap home a late winner. How the game unfolded Newcastle had the ball in the back of the net inside two minutes. Alexander Isak squared for Sean Longstaff to tap home but the offside flag quickly halted celebrations and a VAR check confirmed the Swede had gone too soon. Kyle Walker's attempts to block the shot, which would...
